On July 20, 1991, the Rex Allen Museum Board of Directors commissioned Buck McCain, a Tucson artist to construct the heroic statue.  As a special feature, a bronze heart was inserted into the interior of the chest cavity.  This was a special request by Rex Allen since he has always kept Willcox in his heart.  Now his heart will always remain in Willcox.
